What to Wear to a Dubai Beach Club

A Dubai beach club is not really a beach and it is not really a club. It is a day that starts in the water at eleven and finishes at a table at nine, and the reason people get the outfit wrong is that they dress for one half of it.

What a beach club day actually looks like

Most venues follow roughly the same arc. You arrive late morning, you are in and out of the water and the pool through the early afternoon, the music and the crowd build from around four, and by early evening the place has turned into a restaurant and bar where nobody is swimming.

That arc is the whole brief. You need something you can genuinely swim in, and something that reads as dressed by the evening, without going home to change. The two common mistakes

Dressing only for the pool

A functional swim set with nothing over it is fine until about four o'clock, at which point everyone else has layered up and you are the only person at the table in swimwear. Most venues expect a cover-up away from the water anyway. This is the more common of the two mistakes.

Dressing only for the evening

• "Smart beachwear" or "resort chic" — swimwear at the water, something over it elsewhere. A kaftan, shirt, sarong or dress all satisfy it.
• "No swimwear at the restaurant" — means exactly that. Cover up to eat, even if you are staying on the property.
• "Elevated" or "evening" after a certain hour — the venue turns into a bar; expect to be dressed as if you were going to one.
• Footwear rules — several venues that are relaxed about everything else are strict about flip-flops after dark.

Building the outfit

The swim piece

Beach clubs are the one setting where the shinier, sharper end of the range earns its place. The second bottom
